It took a lot of work and a long time but our work on building an artificial protein cage using gold was finally published in Nature. The work shows that using an 11-sided protein ring we could make a spherical hollow protein with highly unusual geometry, extreme stability and with the normal protein-protein interactiosn replaced with a gold “staple”.
